Discovery / Earth Day Clean-Up 2005
In 2005, due to the press of many exciting projects being undertaken by BSWA, the association decided to forego a large Discovery Day event as in previous years. However, we also wanted to support the hundreds of other Pennsylvania environmental groups who were participating in the "Great PA Cleanup" so BSWA decided to hold a combined Discovery/Earth Day on April 23rd.
Members of BSWA held a cleanup along the Big Spring Creek beginning at 10:00 a.m. They walked the length of the Creek collecting bottles, cans, pizza boxes and other litter and deposited it into bags that were then picked up by two garbage trucks--one provided by West Pennsboro Township and the other by the Borough of Newville.
On this Saturday while others were busy cleaning, BSWA representatives also staffed an informational display in the PFBC parking lot at the headwaters of the Creek There visitors could learn about our ongoing programs, examine area GIS survey and pick up copies of the recently printed BSWA newsletter In addition, we provided our always popular macroinvertebrate display with live specimens and updates on recovery rates in the Big Spring.
BSWA would like to thank all the people who came out to clean up the Spring. We'd also like to thank the Borough of Newville and West Pennsboro township (see photo for particulars) for providing trucks and helpful drivers.
